The fear of deportation haunts every individual whose status is deemed to be illegal. Many asylum seekers, who have escaped torture and violence in their countries of origin in the hope of finding safety and refuge in the UK, testify to their depression when they are unable to escape the terrible conditions of the black economy or the detention centre. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work. Those who do, put up with unspeakable exploitation because they live in fear of being reported to the authorities. Many get paid rates well below the minimum; those are the lucky ones as many do not get paid at all and are beaten if they challenge their employers. Forty one suicides of asylum seekers were recorded from 2000-2005.
