Harriett Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) Harriett Beecher Stowe is the American author of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) attacking slavery inspired by the memoirs of Rev. Josiah Hanson. She followed it with A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853) documenting the realities on which the novel was based. The novel and its many stage adaptations boosted support for the abolition cause. In 1853 Anti-Slavery Society presented her with a petition signed by 1/2m British women. She wrote a second anti-slavery novel Dred in 1856, which was also adapted for the stage.
