Anansi and Brer Englishman

Synopsis:

Presented as 'the first West Indian-English pantomime', this production by Dark and Light presented Anansi, the folk hero of Jamaica - half-man, half-spider - living in Brixton with his family and dealing with the racial prejudices of his local councillor. Referencing the political climate of the time and the role played by right wing anti-immigration politician Enoch Powell, this Jamaican Pantomime made an impact with audiences in representing the traditional folk hero within the British cultural context.
