The celebrations of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in 2007 provided a good opportunity for us to consider whether slavery has, in fact, ended. Many people believe that slavery belongs to the past and at best, only exists in underdeveloped countries, but in reality all our lives even in the developed world are touched by it. We should also be aware of the enslavement of human beings in dirty, dangerous and difficult work in Britain, in the running of our homes, the care of our elderly and disabled and in keeping our sex industry alive. Many vulnerable people are trafficked or smuggled into the UK.
